The Impending Verdict

The emotional cost of this case can never be counted.

Have you been fed the lie that if there was a brothel open, most of Pickton's alleged victims would never have died? '

“That concludes the evidence on behalf of the Defence,” said Defence council Adrian Brooks, bringing to a close the evidentiary portion in the trial of Canada's largest alleged serial killer Robert Pickton.

Defence's portion of the case lasted six weeks, whereas the Crown's case lasted eight months, which leads one to believe that Defence just could not dispute most of the Crown's case or has a lot of confidence that Crown did not, in fact, prove anything.

This case saw around 130 witnesses and stretched over 10 months. I am not sure there is a final tally on cost, but it will run into the tens of millions of dollars, and the emotional impact it had on everyone concerned can never properly be counted.

We still have to hear closing arguments from both sides and from Judge Williams as he instructs the jury on what points of law they must pay attention to and other legal points, but there will be no more new evidence; all that part is done.

I am hoping as I sit and listen to Crown spell out exactly what all their evidence meant and how it all fits, I will acquire new awareness into their case, because I personally have been left with more questions than answers.

It will not be until the end of November that the jury will be sequestered and will begin deliberations - a task I do not envy in any way. I will be waiting with baited breath, though, to hear what the outcome is. I’ve thought about having something pre-written for when the jury comes back…something for either decision, but I think that task is almost impossible, for I have no idea what it will feel like to hear the words and would be shorting the readers of the process that goes on inside as I absorb and digest the verdict.
