Habs rookie defenseman Ryan O'Byrne and veteran defenseman Tom Kostopoulos were arrested outside of a Tampa nightclub early Monday morning.

O'Byrne was charged with grand theft after a woman inside the nightclub alerted security that her purse was missing. Security officers found 23 year-old O'Byrne outside the nightclub with the woman's purse and cell phone. O'Byrne claimed the purse belonged to his girlfriend, but after searching the contents of the purse, it was identified as belonging to the other woman.

Kostopoulos was arrested for resisting an officer without violence. Both players were released on bail Monday morning. The Montreal Canadiens play the Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday.

Who knows what the complete details are surrounding this case, but I have a hard time believing that a NHL player, or a professional athlete for that matter, would steal a woman's purse. Could it have been a mistake on O'Byrne's part? Or was this a practical joke they were playing on the woman? Or could it have been a costly joke that his teammates were playing on O'Byrne? After all, O'Byrne is a rookie and most sports teams are known to haze players during their freshman year.

If it was the Habs' hazing the young rookie, then why not let the woman in on their joke before taking it to this extreme of having the player arrested, along with a veteran player?

Most players are arrested for drunk driving, hit and runs, and domestic violence...but purse snatching? What has the world of hockey come to?
