Children Of Men: Is This Where We're Headed?

Scientists can't figure out why humans are no longer able to bear children and humans are facing their own extinction; societies around the globe are collapsing and desperate immigrants are fleeing to England - the only place that hasn't totally fallen in on itself - and being met with further persecution fueled by fear. The world is unraveling and only by some miracle is there a shred of hope for change.

I've just described the setting of the 2006 political thriller Children of Men. The scariest thing about this movie is that I can see that reality happening at some point.

Could human reproduction just ... end? It seems far-fetched, but with increased pollution, toxins, genetically modified products and a whole host of other "unnatural" components we incorporate into our daily lives, it doesn't seem completely out of the question at some point in our species' future. And looking at some of Orato's stories from Gaza, Darfur, Iran, Iraq and Afghanistan, to name just a few places in serious turmoil, sometimes I get scared for humanity.

After I wrote this, I went looking on Youtube for a clip of the movie I could post with this rant. I came across this clip taken from a half-hour documentary by Children of Men director Alfonso Cuarón entitled "The Possibility of Hope". This is what I meant to say, but the people in the film are scholars, so they have a much more eloquent way of putting it...

Hey Robyn - that movie had a huge impact on me...Maybe because the moment I walked out of the theater, relieved to be in the light of day, I saw a man lying in the streets with a rebar stuck through his head. Read: Children Of Men if you're interested in how I relate to your rant. Vancouver's a beautiful city, but every city has its wars.

Warning, graphic, real-life images of hell on earth
