An Israeli's Take On The Hamas-Israel "Ceasefire"

After so many years of kasams, the Gaza ceasefire (or 'relaxation,' if I translate directly from Hebrew) is a surprise. We hear a lot of empty words, a lot of threats, and a lot of confusion from our leaders.

I can't forget the eight-year-old, the one who lives in Sderot, who lost both his legs in a recent rocket attack. Or my friend's daughter, who, for some reason, out of solidarity I guess, decided to move to Sderot. "There but for the grace of God go I." I once taught for a year at Shaar HaNegev, home of Sapir College, where Gazan rockets fall and students die.

Ceasefire? You're joking. While we are "relaxing," Hamas will be re-arming. The next round is just around the corner--and it will be even bloodier.

This state of war will continue until Hamas recognizes our right to exist. Since 1948, we have been repeatedly threatened with being "pushed into the sea." Israel is so small, so slender, that from some places you can see the Sea of Galilee on one side and the Mediterranean on the other.

How can we make peace (and even "relaxation") with those who are your sworn mortal enemies? That's suicide.
