Shaq: The Most Charismatic Figure In Sports

It’s been hard to watch Shaq as he’s moved into the twilight of his career. He is no longer the most dominant player in the game, and has been a non factor almost the entire season. Struggling with injuries and diminishing skills, O’Neal missed this year’s all-star game, ending his streak at a record tying 14 seasons. But last night, for one game at least, Shaq brought the excitement and charisma that has highlighted his entire career.

Playing for the first time in over a month, the Diesel finished with a respectable 15 points, 9 rebounds, and 2 blocks. Nothing spectacular. But if you watched the game, Shaq was the most intriguing figure on the court.

Obviously hyped for his debut in the desert, Shaq looked ten years younger. He was diving for loose balls, knocking over refs, shouting with passion, and at one point, ran a full court sprint after a basket even though the a whistle had stopped the game.

In the fourth quarter, Shaq kept the Suns in it with blocks, rebounds and buckets. It’s clear that if he can stay healthy, the Big Aristotle can really help the Suns, even though they lost 130-124.

But fans who were lucky enough to catch last night’s game should cherish it. Shaq is the largest man in sports, both in personality and stature. He consistently has fun with the press, the fans, opponents and teammates. Simply put, there is no one else like him in sports. While it was a treat to watch him turn back the clock and bring back the big personality the NBA has been lacking this year, it was also bittersweet. Soon Shaq will leave the sports world, and unfortunately, no one is there to fill his size 23 shoes.
