The Pros And Cons Of Getting Fit

This is what I feel like doing most days.

Now that the sun is out on a fairly consistent basis, I’ve gotten back into exercising. It’s beach season, and since I want to look handsome in my swim trunks, I thought it wise to spend some of my spare time getting in shape. My usual nightly routine was filled with napping, eating, and television – sometimes I eat in bed while watching my television to maximize efficiency – but no more! I am declaring war on the fat cells in my body, love handles beware.

I suppose I should start off by describing my body. Shudder. I’m about 5’7 and somewhere in the 160 pound range. I suppose you could say ‘stocky’, but I prefer to think of my body shape as stout; it sounds sexier. I don’t consider myself to be overweight, but I could afford to lose five or ten pounds. I was an avid athlete all throughout high school, but after a few years of post secondary education which exhausted my sanity as well as my spare time, I lost my athletic edge.

But enough excuses. Here’s some of the good and bad things I’ve discovered on my quest to get fit.

Pro: You Look Better Naked
Since I started exercising again, I’ve discovered the time I spend naked has increased exponentially. I no longer run from the shower, passing the mirror without a sideways glance. I now take a scenic stroll towards it every morning, stare at my slowly forming stomach muscles, 360 degree spin before coming to a stop, gaze at my naked form for another 10-15 seconds, and then proceed to get dressed.

Con: Cardio
I absolutely hate running. Anyone who says they enjoy it is a bald faced liar. You MIGHT get used to it, but you’ll never enjoy it. Yes, jogging can be made tolerable by listening to music, pleasant weather, and a lululemon wearing female running in front of you, but they have a word for a lack of oxygen that causes discomfort; suffocation. Last I heard, it’s not a good thing.

Pro: You Feel Better About Yourself
Have you ever walked four flights of stairs and felt your heartbeat race like paparazzi towards a pantiless Britney Spears hopping out of a car? It’s embarrassing.

I work with this guy, so let me tell you he's definitely being too hard on himself! That said, fitness is a wonderful thing, and so I'd like to join the Mike-Challenge!
