I feel dirty for even stooping to write about this guy (since I know that’s exactly what he wants), but since his latest political stunt is making a mockery of our political system, I feel compelled to speak up and propose an idea to counter his self-aggrandizing, destructive tactics.

For anyone who hasn’t already heard about it, Limbaugh has been making headlines recently with his “Operation Chaos”. The idea is to encourage Republican voters to vote for Hillary Clinton in the primaries in order to extend and deepen the divisions within the Democratic Party and weaken the eventual nominee.

Limbaugh is showing his true colors by deliberately undermining the integrity of our system of government in order to boost his own ratings and promote his own political agenda. What could be more anti-American than that?

Not only is it the height of cynicism and anti-democratic sentiment to encourage people to use their votes to support a candidate who they hate, but this self-described “patriot” actually went so far as to state that his goal is to see violence and “blood in the streets” at the Democratic Convention. How can anyone support such a disgusting sentiment? How can anyone consider themselves patriotic when they want to see their fellow Americans suffer physical harm?

So, I am proposing the following plan of counter-attack. Today I listened to Limbaugh’s entire show (I may have to seek psychiatric counseling to help me recover from the adverse effects) and made a list of every company that advertised on the show (see below). I personally vow that I will not do business with any of these companies for a period of at least one year from today.

I ask anyone who feels the way I do to send an e-mail to operationantichaos@yahoo.com letting me know that you’re joining me. (I will contact all of the advertisers and let them know how many people have taken the pledge. Also, I will be making convenient wallet-sized cards listing all of the below-listed companies in order to facilitate the keeping of the pledge.

Hey Josh - just wondering how your challenge is going?

Rush Limbaugh: Everything That’s Wrong With America

By johnhatch, May 14, 2008 at 14:59

Good article. I'll certainly join the boycott.

I think that since the demise of the Fairness Doctrine in 1984 (thanks Ronnie, and for so much else...) together with the consolidation of media into fewer and fewer hands and the rise of the neo-con crocodiles, more and more hatred and stupidity has been spewed over the airwaves by such people as Limbaugh, Hannity, Coulter and so many others.

Hatred and hypocrisy in equal measure. Rush would put a black person in jail for life for doing what he gives himself a pass for. Bill O'Reilly abuses women and anyone else he feels like (http://gawker.com/5008668/bill-oreilly-meltdown-resurfaces).

There's no such thing as history in America (just fables and fairytales) and there's not much journalism either, at least in the mainstream.

But the crocodiles have had their way for a long time now (and Bill Clinton was no liberal), and look at the result-- a nation that is morally, intellectually and financially on the verge of bankruptcy, loathed by the whole world, enmired in two unwinnable inavsion/wars, a nation that indulges in spying on its own citizens, one that tortures people including children, that kidnaps, that murders.

Instead of sadly deficient education or healthcare, the public discourse centers on whether the 'war president' can poke sombody's eyes out (he apparently can) or crush the testicles of a child in front of the child's parents (yep).

Either there will be a third coup (1963, 2000) in which case America will descend into a permanentt state of fascism, or there will be a return to a semblance of sanity in which case all the Oxycontin in the world won't keep the likes of Limbaugh on the air, or with an audience of any kind. Maybe on skid row.

People will look back on this dark time and wonder how on earth it could have happened. That is, unless it comes to be considered 'the good old days'. Yikes! Time will tell. Sometimes I'm glad I'm getting old, and have no kids.

Re: Now we're acting like Rush!

Interesting! This one's become ad hominem Josh (where people start mud-slinging - that's always when it gets good!).

First off, I agree whole-heartedly that Rush Lambuahg is a jerk. And invariably wrong. Second, I understand that the fact that he even has an audience is at once gauling and disheartening, but then again, so does the guy on the steet corner who says he's from Xandu, Planet of Freedom. What people say is never the problem, it's how well people are able to sift through the crap.

America suffers from an inability to make good calls on what to listen to and what to disregard, but I really really fear the alternative - viz. censorship. In any manifestation, even one where we think we're absolutely certain, it's a poison pill to prevent someone from expressing their opinion regardless of how assinine. "let a thousand blossoms bloom," said Mao - give me all your opinions. Then I'll root you out and have you killed. Is this what we're after, a liberal socialist democratic cosmopolitan Maoism?

As for advertising, fight Rush by averting your attention. The advertisers will leave if the ratings leave. The movie itself means nothing and it is too unrelated to have an impact. It's sideways and won't help.

Lastly, about this idea of attacking fellow interlocuters, and here I address, I suppose "Bud Oracle" and "Melkor". When one comes to this forum it is to comment and thereby to discuss, ergo everyone ought to be open to discourse. This is the sine qua non of peaceful coexistence and understanding - dialogue. I too have read the commentary-opus of Melkor and can tell you that he is obviously a) hefty (by admission), b) apparently has some significant degree of education in pre-Constructivist metaphysics (I'm guessing the Ancient Greeks?) c) he likes the Lord of The Rings - that's right, the oblique allusion is not sufficient to slip past your's truly and c) he's socially and fiscally conservative... OH NO! A Conservative! Let's vote him off the Island!

Is Orato an Island?

Luyen, Cheney shot a Republican Party Lawyer, not a Senator which is also why no one cared...

Interesting thoughts, Brandon. i'm not interested in limiting Melkor's freedom of speech, rather I welcome it.

I consider some of his thoughts veritable mutants, wondrous monsters of thought. Somehow the role of natural selector via reason and rational deduction has fallen on me.

That is exactly what I'm doing, shirking off the personal attaxcks and crucifiying them with their own words.

I don't see anyone else capable of following an argument in a rational way here. They paint me as bully but never make it stick.

I don't care how much believing morons feel hurt. It's time they hurt a bit for all the hurt they cause others with their idiotic thinking. If it makes so much sense then use it rationally to dispell my hurtful words.

Brandon,

I in fact have a degree in philosophy (and in political science) and in fact focused on the Greek ontological stance (which has never actually been improved on by the way), I enjoy LOTR (and this is where the name comes from), and I suppose I'm considered conservative. Unless you're talking to a conservative, then I'm a liberal. It's funny how we must position people in little boxes to meet our own comfort level. However, by all accounts I am the perfect physical human specimen - to be sure, the object of much desire and envy!

Re: Now we're acting like Rush!

By Brandon, May 13, 2008 at 14:39

Haha! My insight is beyond reproach...

I'm going to venture one further guess... Anyone who calls themselves either "Bud Oracle" (referring presumably to the pre-pubescent drug-induced Oracles of the mighty Pythian Apollo at Delphi) or "Melkor" a reference to the Dark Lord of Tolkien's Silmarillion (also known as Morgoth if my memories of teenage-hood stand fast) share something else in common... come on gentlemen, be honest, this conversation is emerging out of a haze of smoke, isn't it? Eh? A little bit? I suspect the Pacific North West's principal economic indsutry is the genesis of all your creativity and metaphysical inquiry...

Interesting fantasy. Induced by Burbon perhaps?

Ah, to be so enlightened that you can judge everyone without a single argument. Again a fantasy of your making that you paint unsupported on me.

Try sticking to my words, stay away from smoky flights of fancy Brandon.

In the sea of American political hacks and mouth pieces, Rush stands alone. He is just a horrible, horrible, horrible person (my opinion). I don’t think you are the first to try something like this against this guy – but for all his faults, he has MANY (unbelievable) loyal listeners/consumers to pick up the slack. As for ‘everything wrong with America’ well, free speech is a positive I think, and epiphenomenal of such a stance are jackasses like him. I’ll grant he represents everything that is wrong with the Republicans. As you may know, I don’t think his counterparts on the left have much value either.

I mainly appreciate this article because I’ve been torn – to go see the new Indiana Jones movie or not to go see the new Indiana Jones movie (on your list to avoid). On the one hand, it’s Indiana Jones. On the other, it was written by George Lucas – and if his recent efforts of redoing a classic are any indication, he’ll end up ruining the original three (not looking forward at all to Indy’s metaclorian count) by releasing this. I’m sorry – I’ll probably go anyway – I am if nothing else a glutton for punishment (although I’ve been called merely a glutton several times).

Melkor,

I must say, yours is the most disappointing response I've gotten to this idea so far. Essentially what you're saying is that you agree with most of what I said, but you're not even willing to inconvenience yourself to the extent of skipping one movie (which, by your own admission, is likely to be disappointing). If this is the level of commitment of the average American to taking responsibility for making our society better and more humane, we don't stand a chance against the well-funded forces of evil.

God help us...

Melkor,

You might be Canadian, but having perused some of your posts, I also know that you are a Judgmental Christian who probably supports this Rush Bimbo idiot.

That is why I conclude that you weren't being totally honest, rather evasive in your answer "I'm Canadian."

Dishonesty, lack of self awareness and judgmental ism are all the mark of the "godly"

This is my opinion, based on the words of some of your other posts compared to this brief lie here.

Melkor, do you ever read in that that book of yours, the scripture, "Ye are snared by the words of your mouth?"

Re: Limbaugh: Everything That’s Wrong With America Personified

By Melkor, May 13, 2008 at 15:26

Hey Bud,

Now, I’m assuming the predicate of this response has more to do with my comment regarding that piece of crap ‘Church and State’ post (if not, my bad). Not something I’ve posted myself mind you, just my response to something someone else posted. My problem there was that it was tremendously one-sided and nonsensical and completely ignores pre-Christian history and the contemporary realities (now, I’m not claiming we’re perfect, just not quite as evil as the non-Christian citizens like to think) – so I’m guessing that you actually don’t want the whole truth, or at least only the truth that conforms to your narrow-minded dogmatic worldview? I do believe that only the religious folks are attacked with impunity. Fine that’s fine. Obviously, the desire to hear only one side of the story is not the sole property of the Christians – something I’ll go ahead and assume you feel you are not guilty of (who needs the self-reflection now?).

So I’m a judgemental (no need for the capital letter in the English Bud) Christian, a clown and a liar? You left something out – someone who could care less what you think. I would give you my assessment, but ad homonym fallacious speak is something I try to avoid (unless of course I’m responding to something which is completely inaccurate – check the historic record regarding a so called ‘creation’ of Church and State – something which predates Christ for crying out loud! – my god, it predates Western society!), and my mother told me if I have nothing nice to say, to not say anything. But please have a nice life labouring under the delusion that you have something worth telling me – I’d listen, but the circus is in town and I have to go spread more lies then go to Church (I know, you think these are the same).

Melkor why is it you only criticize others but have no stand or anything of interest from yourself. Until then all I am going to take you as is bla, bla ,bla, bla.bla, bla ,bla, bla.bla, bla ,bla, bla.bla, bla ,bla, bla.

"Not something I’ve posted myself mind you, just my response to something someone else posted. My problem there was that it was tremendously one-sided and nonsensical and completely ignores pre-Christian history"

That says it all, not something .... yeah as I said you don't really have anything to say yourself. Yeah so its an arbitrary thing... your are just a time wasting fool who has nothing to say himself.

Didn't take long for the Oracle to figure you out, eh?

Get yourself a job as a critic or a wife.

Was that supposed to make sense? How long have you been coo-coo for CoCo Puffs?

Frankly sir, I give your opinions only slightly less value than that of a 100 foot mural of a fly farting.

And please, your doctors prescribe your meds at the levels and duration they need to work effectively. Your skipping your treatment does no one justice, and is not healthy.

Bud - what's with all the name-calling you do on this site. Maybe you should read this article:

Re: Limbaugh: Everything That’s Wrong With America Personified

By Bud Oracle (not verified), May 13, 2008 at 14:16

Maggie,
I resent being placed in the bullying category when there are millions upon millions of Christians, judgmental hooligans like you, oppressing others in these venues as if it were their god given right to spew forth garbage from an unassailable religious platform..

I understand reason is antithetical to Christian's but if you wish to put forth a point of view that judges others, you should put forth the reasons for that. Please point out my act of bullying to me. Don't just paint me with your accusation, but support it. Prove it by using my words as an example. This clown and others like you can't follow the rules and then claim I'm bullying.

YOU ARE THE ONE BULLYING ME! No one has yet attempted to make mockery out of my words, as I have of yours. You attack me personally by hanging "Bully" around my neck.

Grow up, and learn to think, before you insult someone for stating the truth. The things that hurt the most are the things you need to work on.
Don't just call me name, prove it.

And therefore it doesn't matter who you give your money to? Last time I checked the Canadian dollar was worth as much as the US dollar, and the makers of Indiana Jones will benefit just as much if you pay to see their movie, regardless of your nationality.

Re: Limbaugh: Everything That’s Wrong With America Personified

By Melkor, May 13, 2008 at 14:12

Hey Josh,

Actually, that was my attempt at a joke (although true, regardless of what others may think). And I’m not going – believe it or not, I’m not as stupid as I sound – I know the movie is going to suck – I just seized on the opportunity to bad mouth George Lucas (the actual source of evil in the world today).

I am a card carrying Capitalist. I believe the markets should sort this (all?) mess(es?) out, so boycotts are always in a way appealing to me – this is where the battles should be fought (my opinion). It remains clear that Rush’s audience is vast, and because he is so polarizing, such efforts are doomed to failure (it is a numbers game). But (and if you choose to disregard this I’ll understand) good luck hitting them where it hurts.

Josh Sidman, good luck! I am a writer of emails so it would be simple for me to write some to those companies if I had their addresses posted here. I'm in Canada so boycotting is not practical.

When I heard this goof first on my hang gliding trip down the East coast to Florida in th early 90's I said to my friend, "This man is dangerous."

Good luck Josh, have a go at letting your spirit of justice/ democracy guide you. I hope you succeed.

It is the poison of such men that will kill your democracy.

What about Dick Cheney shooting a senator in the face during that hunting trip, and then the senator apologizing to Dick Cheney for the stress he caused...there are so many similarities to the Bush administration's policies its not even funny!
